Kamierabi (2023)

Gorou Ono is currently spending his first year at a private high school in Tokyo, but his new stage of life doesn’t seem to lift him up one bit. He doesn’t care much about the real world and thus has no real dreams or ambitions and spends most of his time with his best friend, Yutaka Akitsu. Perhaps the only person in the world he cares about besides Yutaka is his handsome classmate Honoka. When Gorou receives the dubious news one day that he has been chosen and has one wish, he doesn’t really take the matter seriously. He only mumbles that he would like to get closer to Honoka – and just at that moment, his life takes a completely different course.

The fact that he sees a creature named Lall emerge from his smartphone is something he could still dismiss as a dream; after all, he immediately wakes up again afterwards. At school, however, he gets unexpected attention, even from Honoka. When Gorou takes his chance and is soon alone with her, his wish is literally fulfilled. Unfortunately, his dream of Lall was not a dream at all: she appears again and announces that his wish has been granted and that he must now participate in a competition called “Kamerabi”. In this competition, all candidates fight to the death to gain the title of “god” – and only one can win.

For Gorou, things seem to be getting twice as bad: Honoka, of all people, is one of his opponents, and she also wants to eliminate him immediately. In his distress, Gorou receives an ability that could change things, but does he have to face the battle alone, or can he even find allies to turn the tables completely?

Gorou Ono verbringt gerade sein erstes Jahr auf einer privaten Oberschule in Tokio, doch sein neuer Lebensabschnitt scheint ihn kein bisschen anzuheben. Er kümmert sich nicht groß um die reale Welt, hat daher weder wirkliche Träume noch Ambitionen und verbringt seine Zeit zumeist mit seinem besten Freund Yutaka Akitsu. Die vielleicht einzige Person in der Welt, die ihn neben Yutaka interessiert, ist seine ansehnliche Klassenkameradin Honoka. Als Gorou eines Tages die dubiose Nachricht erhält, er sei auserwählt und habe einen Wunsch frei, nimmt er die Sache nicht wirklich ernst. Er murmelt nur, er wolle Honoka gern näher kommen – und just in diesem Moment nimmt sein Leben einen gänzlich anderen Verlauf.

Dass ihm aus seinem Smartphone ein Wesen namens Lall entsteigt, könnte er noch als Traum abtun, schließlich wacht er sofort wieder auf. In der Schule genießt er jedoch unerwartete Aufmerksamkeit, sogar die von Honoka. Als Gorou seine Chance nutzt und bald mit ihr allein ist, erfüllt sich sein Wunsch sogar wortwörtlich. Leider war sein Traum von Lall aber so gar keiner: Sie erscheint erneut und verkündet, dass sein Wunsch erfüllt sei und er nun an einem »Kamerabi« genannten Wettkampf teilnehmen müsse. In diesem kämpfen alle Kandidaten bis zum Tod, um den Titel des »Gott« zu erlangen – und nur einer kann gewinnen.

Für scheint Gorou scheint es doppelt dick zu kommen: Ausgerechnet Honoka gehört zu seinen Gegnern, und die will ihn auch umgehend eliminieren. Gorou erhält in seiner Not eine Fähigkeit, die einiges ändern könnte. Muss er sich dem Kampf allein stellen oder kann er sogar Verbündete finden, um den Spieß gänzlich umzudrehen?
