Fourteen-year-old Yusuke Urameshi has a reputation at school for being a daredevil criminal, and his childhood friend Keiko is the only person who isn’t afraid of him. He often fights with others, has no respect for authority, regularly skips school, is cheeky, and generally does what he wants.

Although he was no saint, his death was not anticipated. When he selflessly jumps in front of a moving car to save a little boy, the authorities of the spirit world are dumbfounded and make him an unusual offer: he can return to the world of the living if he works for them as a ghost detective from then on.

Under the guidance of the beautiful female god of death, Botan, it is now his task to stop menacing demons that endanger the lives of ordinary people, whether by stealing valuable items or destructive weapons or by practising chaos. He finally gets support from his former rival, Kazuma and the two demons, Kurama and Hiei, who also have a criminal past. The birth of an unlikely hero dawns …
