説明

Tokyopop USA is a company based in Los Angeles that specialises in publishing manga and anime. The company was founded in 1997 as Mixx Publications Inc. and was originally intended to publish primarily manga and magazines (MixxZine). However, one of the first publications was the visual novel for “Sotsugyou: Graduation”. In autumn 1997, the company was renamed Mixx Entertainment Inc., and in 2001, the first anime was released on DVDs and VHS tapes.

In 2008, the company was split into two publishing houses: Tokyopop Inc. for mangas and Tokyopop Media for films and anime. In the process, 39 jobs were cut at the company, and the monthly publication of manga was reduced from around 25 manga per month to just under half. When sales figures fell again in December of the same year, the decision was made to cut another eight jobs.

On May 31, 2011, Tokyopop USA was closed due to a loss of connection to the current market – although individual June releases were still delivered to retailers. On December 10, 2012, the website, which had only been closed in May 2011, was reopened with an announcement: some old employees are said to have planned a new start for the US market with the company Tokyopop. Since then, the company has secured several new licences.

In 2016, the company POP Media Holdings was founded, and Tokyopop USA was transformed into a brand.
