Recent high school transfer student Hasegawa Kodaka is pathetically inept at making friends. Kodaka is an outcast, with his natural blonde hair which he inherited from his deceased English mother and his unpleasant, fierce gaze. When he comes across the brash loner Mikazuki Yozora, who typically chats with her imaginary friend, the two outsiders become the unlikeliest of allies.

Realizing that they have no hope of a normal social life, the two rejects decide to form a group called "The Neighbors Club" in order to make friends and maybe even learn a thing or two about social skills. As luck would have it, five new members join the club who are more socially awkward than they are. Will these quirky misfits ever make normal friends, or are they all doomed to social failure?

Hasegawa Kodaka wechselte auf eine andere Schule und hat nun Probleme neue Freunde zu finden. Seine blonden Haare machen es ihm noch schwerer, da er deshalb als Delinquent abgestempelt wird. Eines Tages beobachtet er seine Klassenkameradin Yozora, als diese sich lebhaft mit ihrer imaginären Freundin Tomo unterhält. Beide sehen ein, dass sie keine Freunde haben, und wollen dagegen etwas unternehmen. Deshalb gründen sie für sich und andere Außenseiter einen Klub, mit dem Ziel, herauszufinden wie man durch gemeinsames Schwimmen, Kochen, Spielen und anderen Gruppenaktivitäten neue Freundschaften aufbauen kann.

HAGANAI narra le rocambolesche vicende di Hasegawa Kodaka, uno studente dai capelli biondi scambiato per un poco di buono che si imbatte in Yozoka Mikazuki, una bella compagna di classe, introversa e sempre di cattivo umore. Poche cose accomunano i due, ma di certo entrambi hanno qualche problema a socializzare. Ecco perché formano un club scolastico Rinjinbu, con lo scopo di fare conoscenza a scuola e non solo... Al club si uniranno, infatti, nuovi compagni (sempre più folli) e chissà se il gruppo riuscirà ad andare d’accordo!
