Jip Man (2008)

In 1935, the village of Foshan was home to numerous schools of various Chinese martial arts, whose practitioners regularly competed against each other. The well-heeled martial artist Ip Man also lives in this village with his family and enjoys considerable renown for his skills in Wing Chun, although he lives a secluded life. Lessons and fights with other masters, for example, only take place behind closed doors.

Two years later, the Second Sino-Japanese War changed everything for the inhabitants of the village, as it was occupied by the Japanese during an invasion. Ip Man and his family are driven out of their house. Ip Man, who now finds it difficult to provide for his family, begins to work in the local coal mines. In the process, he notices that labourers are repeatedly poached for secret competitions. They are to compete in an arena against martial artists from the ranks of the occupying forces, with a sack of rice as their reward.

When the disappearance of a friend leads Ip Man to the arena, he has to realise that the competition is not always fair – far from it. He attracts the interest of General Miura because he competes and is not easy to defeat. It is the prelude to a deluge of problems for Ip Man and his family …

Im Jahre 1935 sind im Dorf Foshan zahlreiche Schulen diverser chinesischer Kampfsportarten ansässig, deren Anhänger regelmäßig gegeneinander antreten. Auch der gut betuchte Kampfkünstler Ip Man lebt mit seiner Familie in diesem Dorf und genießt beträchtliches Ansehen für seine Fähigkeiten im Wing Chun, obwohl er ziemlich zurückgezogen lebt. Lehrstunden sowie Kämpfe mit beispielsweise anderen Meistern finden nur hinter verschlossenen Türen statt.

Zwei Jahre später ändert der Zweite Japanisch-Chinesische Krieg für die Bewohner des Dorfes alles, als dieses im Zuge einer Invasion der Japaner besetzt wird. Ip Man und seine Familie werden dabei aus ihrem Haus vertrieben. Ip Man, der nun Schwierigkeiten hat, seine Familie zu versorgen, beginnt, im lokalen Kohleabbau zu arbeiten. Dabei bekommt er mit, dass wiederholt Arbeitskräfte für geheime Wettkämpfe abgeworben werden. In einer Arena sollen sie gegen Kampfsportler aus den Reihen der Besatzer antreten; als Lohn winkt ein Sack Reis.

Als das Verschwinden eines Freundes auch Ip Man in die Arena führt, muss er mitansehen, dass die Angelegenheit bei weitem nicht immer fair ist. Weil er selbst antritt und offenbar nicht so leicht unterzukriegen ist, erregt er das Interesse von General Miura. Es ist der Auftakt zu einer ganzen Reihe von Problemen für Ip Man und seine Familie …
