Goro Honda is the son of a professional baseball player. Although he is only six years old, he dreams of a future as a professional baseball player to follow in his successful father’s footsteps. After his mother dies, the only people Goro really interacts with are his father and his preschool teacher, Momoko Hoshino, who takes special care of Goro. Unfortunately, there are no playmates his age at the preschool, and there is no child in the neighbourhood who loves baseball as much as he does. So, the boy has no one to play baseball with. Even the local “Little League” team only accepts children aged nine and older. Finally, Goro meets Toshiya Satou, a boy from the neighbourhood who is as fascinated by this sport as he is. So, he teaches him the rules and trains diligently with him. An intimate relationship also develops between Goro’s father, Shigeharu, and Momoko, who becomes more and more integrated into the Hondas’ lives. But Goro soon has to painfully realise that not everything runs smoothly in life – an experience he will have more often as a budding sports star …

Gorou Honda ist der Sohn eines Profi-Baseballspielers und obwohl er erst sechs Jahre alt ist, träumt er von einer Zukunft als professioneller Baseballspieler, um in die Fußstapfen seines erfolgreichen Vaters zu treten. Nachdem seine Mutter stirbt, sind die einzigen Menschen, zu denen Gorou wirklich Kontakt pflegt, sein Vater und seine Vorschullehrerin Momoko Hoshino, die sich besonders eingehend um Gorou kümmert. Weil es in der Vorschule keine Spielkameraden in seinem Alter gibt und auch in der Nachbarschaft kein Kind wohnt, das Baseball so liebt wie er, hat der Junge niemanden, mit dem er Baseball spielen kann. Auch die lokale Mannschaft der »Little League« nimmt erst Kinder mit einem Alter ab neun Jahren in ihre Mannschaft auf. Schließlich begegnet Gorou Toshiya Satou, einem Jungen aus der Nachbarschaft, der ebenso von dieser Sportart fasziniert ist wie er selbst. Also bringt er ihm die Regeln bei und trainiert mit ihm fleißig. Auch zwischen Gorous Vater Shigeharu und Momoko, die mehr und mehr in das Leben der Hondas integriert wird, entsteht eine innige Beziehung. Doch Gorou muss schon bald schmerzlich feststellen, dass im Leben nicht immer alles glatt läuft. Eine Erfahrung, die er als angehender Sportstar noch öfter erleben wird …
