Gankutsuou (2004)

Albert and Franz are two young aristocrats who don’t know what to do with their lives yet. The two set off on a journey into space to discover other cultures and peoples. This is how they come to the planet Luna, where carnival is being celebrated. Here, they see the Count of Monte Cristo for the first time. Albert is incredibly fascinated by the Count’s charisma and would love to meet him. He and his friend Franz are then unexpectedly invited by the Count to his estate on Luna. The Count tells them he would like to settle down on Earth in Albert’s hometown, Paris.

Sometime later, back on Earth, Albert and the Count meet again by chance. Albert is keen to introduce the Count to his parents and the other well-known nobles. At dinner with the nobles, the Count keeps mentioning the city of Marseille, but why? What was in this city? Who is Edmond Dantès? And why do his parents act so strangely when they hear this name? What is behind the mystery of Gankutsuou?

Albert und Franz sind zwei junge Aristokraten, die noch nicht wirklich wissen, was sie mit ihrem Leben anfangen sollen. Die beiden machen sich auf eine Reise ins Weltall, um andere Kulturen und Völker zu entdecken. So kommen sie auf den Planeten Luna, auf dem gerade Karneval gefeiert wird. Hier sehen sie zum ersten Mal den Graf von Monte Christo. Albert ist wahnsinnig fasziniert von der Ausstrahlung des Grafen und würde ihn nur zu gerne kennenlernen. Er und sein Freund Franz werden daraufhin unverhofft vom Grafen auf dessen Anwesen auf Luna eingeladen. Der Graf erzählt, dass er sich gerne auf der Erde niederlassen würde und das in der Heimatstadt von Albert, in Paris.

Einige Zeit später, zurück auf der Erde, treffen sich Albert und der Graf zufällig wieder. Albert möchte unbedingt den Grafen seinen Eltern und den anderen bekannten Adligen vorstellen. Beim gemeinsamen Essen mit den Adligen erwähnt der Graf immer wieder die Stadt Marseille, aber warum? Was war in dieser Stadt? Wer ist Edmond Dantès? Und wieso verhalten sich seine Eltern so merkwürdig, als sie diesen Namen hören? Was steckt hinter dem Geheimnis von Gankutsuou?

Sinopsis:
Peculiar revisión del clásico literario de Alejandro Dumas, "El conde de Montecristo", a cargo del estudio de animación Gonzo. El clásico nos narra la historia del joven marinero Edmund Dantés, acusado injustamente de agente bonapartista y condenado a prisión sin juicio por el secretario del procurador del rey, quien ve en Dantés una amenaza a su prometedor futuro, pues puede descubrirse a través de él un complot organizado por su padre contra la monarquía. Edmund es encarcelado en el Castillo de If donde conoce al Abate Faria (también encerrado) quien en el transcurso de los años le enseña toda su sabiduría y le revela el secreto de un tesoro escondido en la Isla Monte Cristo del cual hace posesión Dantés cuando huye de la cárcel. Una vez libre decide buscar a las personas que lo ayudaron y que lo traicionaron, descubriendo como su padre había muerto de hambre y abandono.
