Cello Hiki no Gauche (1963)

Goshu is a young man who lives in a small house outside of town and plays the cello in the local orchestra. Unfortunately, Goshu’s playing is letting down the rest of the orchestra and the conductor is running out of patience with him. Over the next few nights, however, Goshu is visited in his home by a succession of animals with musical requests for him - a cat, a bird, a raccoon dog and a mouse - much to Goshu’s annoyance. What Goshu doesn’t realise is that these tasks and encounters are teaching him how to overcome the flaws in his playing in the last few days before the big concert.

Dieser Stop-Motion-Film hat die berühmte Erzählung von Kenji Miyazawa zum Gegenstand, in der Gauche, ein junger Cellist, der in einem kleinen Orchester spielt, vom Dirigenten wegen seines unvollkommenen Spiels getadelt wird. Als Gauche abends sich zu Hause hinsetzt, um die fraglichen Stellen zu üben, bekommt er in der Folge Besuch von verschiedenen Tieren, die jeweils eine andere Bitte an ihn richten, welche aber alle mit seinem Cellospiel zu tun haben. Wie sehr diese Begegnungen nun sein eigenes Spiel beeinflussen, ahnt er jedoch noch nicht, und so ist auch der Dirigent bei der Aufführung überrascht, welche Fortschritte Gauche gemacht hat.
