Rukia Kuchiki ist die Schwester des Kommandanten der 6. Kompanie Byakuya Kuchiki und ist sehr gut mit Renji Abarai befreundet. Rukia ist ein nettes, fröhliches Mädchen, das ihre Pflichten als Shinigami sehr ernst nimmt und – da sie sie aus der Adelsfamilie Kuchiki stammt – sich auch elegant und höflich zu geben weiß. Sie versteht sich auf Anhieb sehr gut mit ihrem »Schüler« Ichigo Kurosaki und bringt ihm anfangs alles bei, was er als Shinigami wissen sollte, aber ab und zu zanken sich die beiden auch gerne. Rukia ist eine Kidou-Expertin, kennt sich also mit den diversen Zaubersprüchen der Shinigami aus und wendet sie auch des Öfteren im Kampf an, wie z.B. das »Shakkahou« (»Shot of Red Fire«) oder das »Soukatsui« (»Blue Fire, Crash Down«). Rukia wurde aufgrund ihres Familienstandes immer bevorzugt und bewunderte deswegen Kaien Shiba und dessen Frau Miyako sehr, da die beiden sie nicht wie eine Adlige behandelten. Ihr Zanpakuto Sode no Shirayuki gilt als das schönste Zanpakuto in der Soul Society, da es vollkommen schneeweiß ist. Rukia beherrscht mit Sode no Shirayuki drei »Tänze«: »Some no mai, Tsukishiro« (First Dance, White Moon) womit sie eine Eissäule erschafft; »Tsugi no mai, Hakuren« (Next Dance, White Ripple) wodurch die eine Eiswand erschaffen kann und »San no mai, Shirafune« (Third Dance, White Sword) wodurch sie ihr Zanpakuto zu einem Eisschwert verwandeln kann.
