Gainax Co., Ltd. is a Japanese animation studio founded on December 24, 1984, and headquartered in Musashino.
The company is best known for the anime “Neon Genesis Evangelion”. In addition to anime, Gainax also produces computer software.
The production of the anime “Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honnêamise” led to the foundation of the animation studio in 1984. The studio outsources the production of many of its anime to other companies. Since September 2016, all animation departments have been outsourced to Fukushima Gainax (currently: Gaina Co., Ltd.).
Due to various mismanagement issues, the company accumulated large debts. As some creditors no longer wanted to wait for their money, a debt collection agency was called in, which led to the company’s insolvency at the end of May 2024.
Despite the bankruptcy, the GAINAX label was retained as it had already been taken over by Studio Khara.
