Toshiko Tomura vient de recevoir le prestigieux prix littéraire Akutagawa pour son roman intitulé La Femme Insecte. L’écriture n’est pas le seul talent de cette femme séduisante qui réussit avec brio tout ce qu’elle entreprend: elle est également une comédienne reconnue et la lauréate d’un grand prix de design new-yorkais. Pourtant, derrière ce génie et ce visage angélique se cachent de nombreux mystères: au moment de la remise de son prix littéraire, l’ancienne colocataire de Toshiko est retrouvée pendue devant son poste de télévision ... Suicide ou meurtre ?
Le journaliste Aokusa, persuadé que la réussite de Toshiko n’est pas le simple fait de son talent, décide de mener l’enquête … Mais réussira-til à résister à ses charmes ?

Protagonista della storia è Toshiko Tomura, giovane e bella scrittrice che grazie al suo libro (intitolato La cronaca degli insetti umani) ha conquistato il prestigioso premio Agutagawa. Incredibile a credersi, questo non è che l’ultimo di una serie di riconoscimenti di cui Toshiko è stata insignita: in precedenza aveva infatti ottenuto un premio come architetto ed era stata applaudita come nascente stella del teatro. I media la adorano; giornali, radio, televisioni, ogni sua mossa è monitorata e pubblicizzata. Ma come riesce ad essere così talentuosa? La verità dietro a questo successo risiede nell’abilità di Toshiko di “far propri” i talenti altrui. Tutti i suoi traguardi sono stati infatti ottenuti a scapito delle persone che hanno avuto la sfortuna di entrare in contatto con lei. Sfruttando il suo carattere brioso e il suo bell’aspetto, la ragazza riesce infatti ad avvicinarsi alle sue “vittime” e a spremerne ogni talento, ogni capacità. Quando incontra il signor Kamaishi, un industriale che lavora nel settore dell’acciaio, sembra aver trovato il suo “doppio”: altrettanto avido di potere, manipolatore e senza scrupoli…
