Senpai wa Otokonoko (2019)

Having just started her first year of high school, the lively Saki Aoi confesses her love to her schoolmate Makoto Hanaoka, who is only one year older than her. What the whole school except the “freshmen” apparently knows: Makoto is actually a boy who loves cross-dressing and therefore has a hard time with his classmates, and thus, he has become a loner who keeps to himself in the background.

Makoto, who is otherwise only used to “confessions of love” from male classmates motivated by tests of courage or punishments during games of forfeits, tries to explain his low status to Saki in order to protect her from also losing status. Saki is not interested in all this at all. She seems to see more in Makoto than just a pretty cross-dresser, maybe even more than Ryuuji Taiga, Makoto’s childhood friend and currently only friend at high school. Relatively quickly, a friendship triangle is formed that begins to clear up the prejudices of many a classmate.

However, the longer the three disparate characters are together, the more complicated their relationships become. It also becomes increasingly clear that Makoto is not the only one with secrets and problems and that for all three of them, these are not limited to school …

Gerade eben im ersten Jahr der Oberschule angekommen, gesteht die quicklebendige Aoi Saki ihrer ein Jahr älteren Mitschülerin Makoto Hanaoka ihre Liebe. Was offenbar die ganze Schule außer den »Frischlingen« weiß: Makoto ist eigentlich ein Junge, der Crossdressing liebt und deswegen bei seinen Mitschülern einen schweren Stand hat, sodass er zu einem sich im Hintergrund haltenden Einzelgänger geworden ist.

Makoto, der sonst nur aus Mutproben oder aus Strafen bei Pfänderspielen motivierte »Liebesgeständnisse« von männlichen Mitschülern gewohnt ist, versucht Saki seinen niedrigen Status zu erklären, um sie davor zu schützen, ebenfalls an Status zu verlieren. Saki interessiert das alles überhaupt nicht. Sie scheint in Makoto mehr zu sehen als nur einen hübschen Crossdresser, vielleicht sogar mehr als Ryuuji Taiga, Makotos Kindheitsfreund und derzeit einziger Freund an der Oberschule. Relativ schnell bildet sich ein Freundschaftsdreieck, das die Vorurteile so mancher Mitschüler aufzuräumen beginnt.

Je länger die drei ungleichen Charaktere jedoch zusammen sind, desto komplizierter werden die Zweierbeziehungen untereinander. Zunehmend wird auch klar, dass nicht nur Makoto Geheimnisse und Probleme hat, und dass sich diese für alle drei nicht nur auf die Schule beschränken …
