Questi un giorno entra a far parte di una realtà virtuale interattiva, un MMO ( massively multi-player online), denominata «Sword Art Online». E qui sorge una complicazione: una volta entrati in SAO, è possibile uscirne solo da vincitori, completando il gioco. In caso contrario, infatti, giungere ad un game over equivarrebbe per il giocatore a morte certa.
