Gojira × Mosura × Mechagojira: Tokyo S.O.S. (2003)

This film continues the events from “Godzilla against Mechagodzilla” and also refers to the 1961 film “Mothra”.

A year ago, Mechagodzilla, also known as Kiryuu, was severely affected while fighting Godzilla. A total of 73% of its mechanical parts were destroyed in the process. The loss of the Absolute Zero Cannon is especially painful for the army. Since an expensive and exceptional crystal is required for the repair, it is uncertain when the cannon will be ready again. Godzilla can reappear at any time. Will Kiryuu manage to defeat him without this powerful weapon?

While the mechanics, including Dr Shin’ichi Chuujou’s grandson Yoshito Chuujou, are working flat out to repair Kiryuu, a new team is being put together to control the mechanical giant. The former pilots, Akane Yashiro, Kenji Sekine and Susumu Ya, are travelling to the USA for a year to learn better application strategies for Kiryuu. The new team consists of the operator Kyousuke Akiba and the pilot Azusa Kisaragi, who serviced aircraft together with Yoshito four years ago and is now piloting the Shiragasi aircraft.

In the meantime, an unidentified flying object invades Japanese territory. It turns out to be the giant moth Mothra. An impending danger is announced by Mothras priestesses, also called Shobijin or Cosmos. When the Kiryuu Project took shape a few years ago, the skeleton of the first Godzilla, killed in 1954, was brought to the surface from the ocean floor and used as a scaffolding for Kiryuu. However, people have intervened in the divine realm and messed up the time flow in the process. In addition, the second Godzilla is lured to the Japanese mainland by the skeleton. Mothra’s priestesses now ask Dr Chuujou to convince the government to bring the structure of the first Godzilla back to the ocean floor, which would equate to the loss of Kiryuu. The priestesses promise that Mothra, instead of Kiryuu, will protect humanity from Godzilla. However, should the government stand in the way, Mothra would become the enemy of humanity.

Vor einem Jahr wurde Mechagodzilla, auch Kiryuu genannt, beim Kampf gegen Godzilla schwer in Mitleidenschaft gezogen. Insgesamt 73 % seiner mechanischen Teile wurden dabei zerstört. Für die Armee ist der Verlust der Absolute-Zero-Kanone besonders schmerzhaft. Da für die Reparatur ein teurer Verbindungskristall gebraucht wird, ist es ungewiss, wann die Kanone wieder einsatzbereit ist. Godzilla kann jederzeit wieder auftauchen. Schafft es Kiryuu, ihn auch ohne diese mächtige Waffe zu besiegen?

Während die Mechaniker, zu denen u. a. Dr. Shin’ichi Chuujous Enkelsohn Yoshito Chuujou gehört, mit Hochdruck an der Reparatur von Kiryuu arbeiten, wird ein neues Team zusammengestellt, das den mechanischen Riesen steuern soll. Die ehemaligen Piloten, Akane Yashiro, Kenji Sekine und Susumu Ya, reisen nämlich für ein Jahr in die USA, um dort bessere Anwendungsstrategien für Kiryuu zu erlernen. Das neue Team besteht aus dem Operator Kyousuke Akiba und der Pilotin Azusa Kisaragi, die vor vier Jahren zusammen mit Yoshito Flugzeuge gewartet hat und nun die Shiragasi-Flugzeuge steuert.

In der Zwischenzeit dringt ein unbekanntes Flugobjekt in das japanische Hoheitsgebiet ein. Es stellt sich heraus, dass es sich hierbei um die Riesenmotte Mothra handelt. Eine drohende Gefahr wird von Mothras Priesterinnen, auch Shobijin oder Cosmos genannt, angekündigt. Als das Kiryuu-Projekt vor ein paar Jahren Form angenommen hat, wurde das Skelett des ersten Godzillas, der 1954 getötet wurde, vom Meeresboden an die Oberfläche gebracht und als Gerüst für Kiryuu benutzt. Die Menschen haben damit jedoch in den göttlichen Bereich eingegriffen und den Zeitfluss in Unordnung gebracht. Zudem wird der zweite Godzilla vom Skelett ans japanische Festland gelockt. Mothras Priesterinnen bitten nun Dr. Chuujou, die Regierung davon zu überzeugen, das Skelett des ersten Godzillas wieder ins Meer zurückzubringen, was mit dem Verlust von Kiryuu gleichzusetzen wäre. Die Priesterinnen versprechen, dass Mothra anstelle von Kiryuu die Menschheit vor Godzilla beschützen wird. Sollte die Regierung sich jedoch querstellen, würde Mothra zum Feind der Menschheit werden.
