JJ Sonny CHIBA (人物)

Shin’ichi Chiba was a Japanese actor, singer, film director and martial artist. The stage name Sonny Chiba was first used in 1974 for the US release of the film “The Street Fighter”. He adopted this name, but put JJ for “Justice Japan” in front of it. He used the name Rindou Wachinaga for his work as a director.

Chiba was one of the first actors to become famous as an actor, primarily through his martial arts. In the course of his career, which lasted almost 60 years, he appeared in over 200 films and series.

He died in 2021 at the age of 82 after being infected with COVID-19.

His close relatives include numerous other actors: his younger brother Jirou Yabuki, his first wife Youko Nogiwa, his daughter Juri Manase and his two sons Mackenyu Arata and Gordon Maeda.
